This game got its name from the fact that the loser had to buy a round
of drinks.
All players, when not playing for drinks, ante an agreed amount into the pot. The game is played with a 52 deck of cards. The dealer would serve 5 cards to each player, face down, and one at a time plus he would deal an extra hand. That hand, known as the "Widow" was dealt before the dealers hand and placed in the middle of the table face down. |
|
No more cards are dealt after the initial five cards. Any player with a pat hand and willing to play it would signify so by knocking on the table. At that point the remaining players have one chance to improve their hands. The "Widow" hand is revealed and the player to the left of the player who knocked can select one card from the Widow and replace it with a card from his hand or he can take the entire Widow and replace it with his hand. This play continues until all players get one chance to improve.
|
If, after the first round, no player has knocked the Widow is revealed and play continues with each player taking a card from the Widow and replacing it with a card from his hand. This play continues until a player knocks. Once a player knocks the remaining players get one chance to improve their hand. |

Once everyone except the knocker has had a chance to improve his hand all hands are revealed and the high hand wins the pot or if you are playing for drinks the losing hand buys. Hand ranks were the same as poker.
